Monday 3 — Matthew 3; James 3; Psalms 18-22; Ode 6 Commemoration of the memory of Yehuda bar Ya’aqub Avinu (son of Ya’aqub the Patriarch and Leah the Matriarch). Fast of the Firstborn (all first born sons fast on this day). New Moon expected. What does it mean when it says “new moon expected?” The celebration of the New Moon is observational – which means, it must be sighted/observed in the sky before the celebration can begin. The date of the expectation is based on various secular astronomical calculations, which are usually accurate, however, regardless of the date (within a 30 day period), the new moon must be observed by the human eye.
