Kiddush Prayers

Kiddush Prayers (Prayers for Friday Evening, After Candle Lighting Blessings)

Shalom,

For information regarding Erev Shabbat and detailed instructions concerning Kiddush, please see this page.

If you are accustomed to using a non-Netzari siddur, please be advised there is one major difference in the reading of the portion from Genesis 2. We say “on the sixth day”, while most (or all) non-Netzari siddurim (prayer books) say “on the seventh day God finished His work.” Our use of the term “sixth day” in relation to God ceasing from His work is based on the text of the Aramaic Peshitta Tanakh.

Numbers in {stylized brackets} indicate foot notes.

Kiddush Prayers (Prayers for Friday Evening, After Candle Lighting Blessings)

It is our tradition to recite the 23rd Psalm and Exodus 31:16,17 in Hebrew or any other language common to the family or individual reciting the verses. Afterwhich we recite the following:

Vay’hi erev vay’hi voker yom ha’shishi
And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day. {1}

vay’khulu ha’shamayim v’ha’aretz v’khol tz’va’am
The heavens, the earth, and all their vast array were finished. {2}

vay’khal Elohim ba’yom ha’shishi m’lakh’to asher asah
On the sixth day God finished His work which He had done

va’yish’bot ba’yom ha’sh’vi’i mikol m’lakh’to asher asah
and He ceased on the seventh day from all His work which He had done

Vay’varekh Elohim et yom ha’sh’vi’i vay’kadeish oto
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it

ki vo shavat mikol m’lakh’to asher bara Elohim la’asot
because He rested in it from all His work of creation which He had done

[Raise the blessing cup in the right hand and recite one of the following]

Barukh atah YHWH, Eloheinu, melekh ha’olam
Blessed are You, Yah, our God, King of the universe

—————–
[If using wine or grape juice we recite the following:]

borei p’ri ha’gafen (Amein)
Who creates the fruit of the vine (Amen)

—————–
[If using anything other than wine or grape juice we recite the following instead of the above:]

shehakol nih’yeh b’milta (Amein)
Who made all things exist through the word (Amen)

—————–

[Place the cup back on the Shabbat table]

Barukh atah YHWH, Eloheinu, melekh ha’olam
Blessed are You, Yah, our God, King of the Universe

asher kid’shanu b’mitz’votav v’ratzah vanu
who sanctifies us with His Commandments, and has been pleased with us

v’shabat kad’sho b’ahavah uv’ratzon hin’chilanu zikaron l’ma’aseih v’rei’shit
You have lovingly and willingly given us Your holy Shabbat as an inheritance, for the memory of creation

ki hu yom t’chilah l’mik’ra’ei kodesh zeikher litzi’at Mitz’rayim
because it is the first day of our holy assemblies, for the memory of the exodus from Egypt

ki vanu va’charta v’otanu kidash’ta mikol ha’amim
because You have chosen us and sanctified us from all peoples

v’shabat kad’sh’kha b’ahavah uv’ratzon hin’chal’tanu
and have given us Your holy Shabbat willingly and lovingly as an inheritance

Barukh atah YHWH m’kadeish ha’shabat (Amein).
Blessed are You, Adonai Yah, who sanctifies Shabbat (Amen).
